Wine of the Week: 2021 Roederer Estate Clark Road Vineyard Brut

Each week, I spotlight a wine that truly stands out—whether for its singular character, compelling backstory, or the sheer pleasure it brings in the glass. This week’s pick is one that feels especially meaningful: the 2021 Roederer Estate Clark Road Brut, a single-vineyard, vintage-dated sparkling wine from Anderson Valley.

What makes Clark Road distinctive to me is that it represents a more focused expression of place. Beginning with the 2020 vintage, Roederer Estate introduced two single-vineyard, vintage-dated sparkling wines—Clark Road and Apple Valley—marking an important evolution for the estate. Prior to this, the only vintage-dated sparkling wine produced by Roederer Estate was its tête de cuvée, L’Ermitage, which follows the Champagne model: only the best of the vintage is selected. That same discipline—vintage expression only when warranted—now extends to these single-vineyard wines.

About the Clark Road Vineyard

Roederer Estate has farmed the Clark Road Vineyard since 1999, giving the winemaking team decades of firsthand experience with the site. Located on the cooler, western side of Anderson Valley, the vineyard is particularly well suited to Pinot Noir, benefiting from coastal influence and a long, measured growing season.

That experience is evident in how the wine is shaped. Farming and harvest decisions here prioritize freshness, tension, and finesse over power. In this case, the team’s familiarity with the site informed a decision to pick Clark Road later than other comparable vineyards, allowing fruit to reach full physiological maturity while retaining acidity. The result is a sparkling wine that feels confident and restrained—clearly Roederer Estate in style, yet unmistakably site-driven.

Inside the Bottle: 2021 Clark Road Brut

TThe 2021 Clark Road Brut is a blend of 78% Pinot Noir and 22% Chardonnay, fermented primarily in stainless steel (93%), with 7% fermented in oak casks and approximately 5% reserve wines aged in oak casks. The limited use of oak contributes texture and breadth without overt aromatic influence.

The wine was disgorged in December 2024 after 30 months on the yeast, allowing complexity to build while maintaining freshness and structural balance. Dosage is measured and precise at 5.5 g/L, reinforcing the wine’s dry, food-friendly profile.

Tasting Notes

Pale straw in color, the wine opens with layered aromatics of Asian pear, dried red cherries, Meyer lemon zest, flint, tamarind hard candy, and sourdough. On the palate, it is medium-bodied, with a creamy mousse and mouthwatering acidity. Flavors of cherries, strawberries, Asian pear, and Meyer lemon zest are joined by a subtle hint of vanilla, carrying through to a long, clean finish.

ABV: 12.5%

Roederer Estate Sparkling Wines: How They Fit Together

Roederer Estate’s sparkling wines follow a clear hierarchy shaped by house style—French elegance married to California vibrancy—along with time and intent.

  • Multi-Vintage Estate Wines
Brut, Brut Rosé, and Extra Dry
The foundation of the program, focused on balance, consistency, and house style, using exclusively estate-grown fruit.
  • Brut Library Reserve
Aged longer than the standard Brut, the Library Reserve explores how extended time adds depth and complexity to the estate’s core style.
  • Single-Vineyard, Vintage-Dated Wines
    Clark Road and Apple Valley
Introduced beginning with the 2020 vintage, these wines highlight individual sites within Anderson Valley, offering greater transparency of place and season.
  • L’Ermitage (Tête de Cuvée)
Produced only when conditions warrant, L’Ermitage follows the Champagne model: only the best of the vintage is selected. It represents the most concentrated and age-worthy expression in the portfolio.

Together, these wines reflect a long-standing philosophy—style first, site when meaningful, and vintage expression only when earned.

Final Thoughts

The 2021 Roederer Estate Clark Road Brut underscores how precision farming and site transparency are central to a wine’s quality and distinction. It combines the elegance Roederer Estate is known for with clear cool-climate tension, textural depth, and restraint.

This is a wine that rewards attention without demanding it. Whether enjoyed on its own or at the table, Clark Road reads as a logical extension of Roederer Estate’s long-standing philosophy—confident, transparent, and firmly rooted in Anderson Valley. For readers drawn to site-driven sparkling wines, this bottling makes a persuasive case.

We’ve enjoyed Roederer over the years but it’s been a while since we’ve had one — a great reminder to re-visit!

It’s fun for me to see this evolution to single vineyard vintage bubbles from Roederer. It kind of gives them that cool kid “Grower Champagne” vibe. I think this one is excellent!

  2. I’ve always loved Roederer Estate sparkling wines but have never had any of their vintage wines. Must address this!
