Wine of the Day; 2017 Kalfu Kuda Pinot Noir

This is a charming wine that over delivers for the price and is welcome in my glass anytime!

There are many eternal questions in the world of wine, such as:

  • Screwcap or cork?
  • What is “natural” wine?
  • Which is better, biodynamic, sustainable or organic wine?
  • Can you buy a decent bottle of Pinot Noir for less than $20?

Those first three questions are beyond the scope of this post, but I gladly submit today’s Wine of the Day – The 2017 Kalfu Kuda Pinot Noir as an answer for the fourth question!

See my Instagram post below for tasting notes and background information about this wine. Cheers!

When it comes to high QPR wines, I’ve been impressed with wines coming out of Chile. In particular, those in the $15-$25 range. This #sample of 2017 Kalfu Kuda Pinot Noir from the Leyda Valley is a good example. This Pinot Noir is sourced from the Las Terrazas Vineyard in the Leyda Valley. For the uninitiated, the Leyda Valley is a small sub-region of the San Antonio Valley wine region. It is located just 8 miles from the Pacific Ocean. The region produces bright, vibrant wines made from two grapes that love cool climate – Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Kalfu means ‘blue’ in the language of the Mapuche, the indigenous inhabitants of Chile, and for the Mapuche, Kalfu is synonymous with the magnificent Pacific Ocean. The wine pours translucent violet with red fruit, crushed rocks, earth and spice aromas. On the palate it’s light-bodied with vibrant acidityand black cherry, raspberry, and vanilla spice flavors. Aged for 12 months in French oak ; a combination of new (10%), second use(20%) and (70%) neutral barrels 14% abv|SRP – $19|Sample. This is a charming wine that over delivers for the price and is welcome in my glass anytime! . . #wine #winelover #pinotnoir #chileanwine #leydavalley #winenot #winewriter #enofylzwineblog
