Wine of the Week: 2021 Hanzell “Estate” Chardonnay, Moon Mountain District
Some wines delight; others ground you in place. This week’s Wine of the Week, the 2021 Hanzell “Estate” Chardonnay, does both. I’ve admired Hanzell for years, though I’ve never purchased a bottle—not for lack of availability, but because Sonoma offers so many standout Chardonnays. When fellow wine lovers gifted us this bottle, it felt like the perfect chance to finally sit with a producer that helped shape the region’s identity.
Hanzell’s estate vineyards are organically farmed and average 37 years of age, planted between 413 and 810 feet on volcanic Red Hill Series and Raynor–Montara clay-loam. These rocky, low-vigor soils—combined with dramatic hillside exposures—give the Estate Chardonnay its hallmark clarity, lift, and mineral edge. The 2021 bottling shows that beautifully: golden, structured, quietly powerful. Paired with a bowl of creamy chanterelle pasta with lemon thyme and basil—both from our garden—something about the match just fell into place.
Hanzell: Precision with Purpose
Founded in 1953, Hanzell pioneered techniques—temperature-controlled fermentation, French oak aging—that helped shape modern California Chardonnay. Today, the winery is a Certified Organic and Integrated Holistic Farm, managing vineyards, gardens, orchards, and livestock as a single, interdependent ecosystem.
I’ve tasted Hanzell at consumer events over the years, always with admiration. Spending an evening with a full bottle made that admiration feel well placed.
Moon Mountain District: Volcanic Beauty, High-Altitude Tension
Hanzell sits within the Moon Mountain District, a rugged stretch of the Mayacamas defined by fractured basalt, steep slopes, warm days, and cool, restorative nights. The volcanic soils—low in nutrients and highly draining—yield small, concentrated berries and Chardonnays marked by brightness, mineral drive, and savory detail.
You feel that imprint clearly in the glass.
Tasting the 2021 Hanzell “Estate” Chardonnay
Tasting note: Pale golden yellow color with lifted aromas of white peach, unsweetened Meyer lemon curd, dried herb, brioche and lime blossom. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied, beautifully textured and very fresh with Meyer lemon, white peach, pear, mixed citrus, and vanilla flavors with a touch of wet stone minerality. Long finish.
Fermentation: 26% new French oak, 74% stainless
Aging: 18 months in French oak + stainless
ABV: 13.5%
SRP: $59.95 (gifted bottle)
A Chardonnay that speaks clearly of its mature vines and hillside home. 93 pts Very highly recommended.
The Pairing: Silky Chanterelle Pasta with Lemon Thyme & Basil
With two pounds of fresh chanterelles on hand, a creamy mushroom pasta was inevitable. Lemon thyme and basil from our garden, plus lemon zest and a splash of cream, created a dish that lifted the wine’s brightness and echoed its savory depth.
Why it worked:
- Creaminess matched the wine’s generous mid-palate
- Lemon thyme + zest mirrored its citrus tone
- Garden basil added freshness and lift
- Chanterelles echoed the wine’s mineral, earthy notes
The harmony felt effortless.
Final Thoughts
The 2021 Hanzell “Estate” Chardonnay is a vivid example of what makes Sonoma—and Moon Mountain in particular—so compelling for Chardonnay lovers. It’s precise, expressive, and rooted in place. Paired with chanterelle pasta, it offered one of my most memorable food-and-wine moments of the year.
If you appreciate terroir-driven Chardonnay with quiet power, this bottle belongs on your table.

We love this producer and have had many a terrific wine of theirs (though not recently). Absolutely love this pairing and appreciate the inspiration!
I’ll be drinking more Hanzell going forward! Cheers!
