Sip Spotlight: 2021 Gary Farrell Lancel Creek Vineyard Pinot Noir

Summer is my favorite season, and one of the things I’ve always loved about California is its gift of Indian Summer—the way warm afternoons stretch the season of alfresco dining, grilling, and BBQ well into fall. With that spirit in mind, I was excited to uncork a sample of the 2021 Gary Farrell Lancel Creek Vineyard Pinot Noir.

Summer sipping often leans toward crisp whites, refreshing rosés, and light, chillable reds—and I enjoy those as much as anyone. But sometimes, it’s nice to have something with a little more depth, a wine that delivers substance without losing vibrancy. That’s where the 2021 Gary Farrell Lancel Creek Vineyard Pinot Noir makes its entrance: elegant, expressive, and perfectly suited for lingering summer nights that slide into autumn—especially when served with a slight chill.

Disclosure: I received this wine as a media sample. The opinions expressed here are my own.

The Vineyard and Winemaking

The fruit for this wine hails from Lancel Creek Vineyard, tucked into the windswept hills of the West Sonoma Coast near Occidental—just three miles from the Pacific Ocean. That close coastal influence shapes the wine profoundly: cool morning fog, brisk ocean breezes, and dramatic diurnal shifts all help preserve acidity while allowing flavors to ripen slowly and fully.

At the winery, winemaker Brent McKoy, who was hired by Gary Farrell himself back in 2005 and later succeeded Theresa Heredia, continues the estate’s long tradition of crafting site-driven wines. His approach emphasizes restraint, balance, and letting the vineyard’s natural character speak for itself.

About Gary Farrell Winery

Founded in 1982, Gary Farrell Winery quickly established itself as a leader in Russian River Valley Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Farrell, who had worked with pioneers like Davis Bynum, Joe Rochioli, Tom Dehlinger, and Robert Stemmler, helped elevate Sonoma County to international recognition with wines that reflected both place and precision.

Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of tasting many Gary Farrell Pinot Noirs, and the common thread is their harmony: cool-climate fruit lifted by bright acidity, supported by polished tannins, and often layered with savory undertones that make Pinot Noir endlessly compelling. Earlier this summer, I had the chance to visit the winery for the first time. Perched high above the valley in Healdsburg, the setting is as picturesque as the wines themselves. If you’re a fan of cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, I can’t recommend a visit enough—it’s a destination as inspiring as the wines.

In the Glass

This wine is compose of the Calera, Pommard, and 777 clones.

The wine pours a medium dark ruby color with enticing red cherry, cranberry black tea, cedar, savory dried herb, and a hint of forest floor aromas. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied with juicy acidity and velvety well-integrated tannins with cranberry, red cherry, raspberry, black tea and savory spice flavors accented with hints of citrus zest and salinity. Long finish. 14.3 % abv. A wine of finesse and depth, it shows why the Sonoma Coast remains one of the most exciting Pinot Noir regions in the world.

Pairing Notes

This Pinot proved wonderfully versatile at the table. I paired it with two of my summer grilling favorites—321 Sweet and Heat St. Louis Ribs and Lockeford Sausage Smoked Brats. The wine’s lively acidity and layered fruit cut through the smoky richness beautifully, while its savory notes mirrored the char and spice from the grill. With our recent heatwave, I also appreciated that the wine could be served with a slight chill (about 20 minutes in the fridge), which made it all the more refreshing.

Final Thoughts

The 2021 Gary Farrell Lancel Creek Vineyard Pinot Noir ($75 SRP) is a wine that bridges the seasons effortlessly—bright and lifted enough for late-summer evenings, yet structured and layered enough to carry into fall and beyond. Few wines bridge the seasons quite like Pinot Noir. The 2021 Lancel Creek Vineyard Pinot Noir was a perfect companion for grilling in the heat—and I know it will shine with autumn dishes too. If you’re looking for a Pinot Noir that brings both elegance and soul to the table, this one is well worth seeking out.

This review really captures why Pinot Noir is such a versatile wine. I’ve always thought of it as more of a fall red, but serving it with a slight chill for summer BBQs is genius. Now I’m curious to try the 2021 Lancel Creek Pinot with ribs.
