Each week, I spotlight a wine that delivers—whether through character, story, or sheer pleasure in the glass. This week’s pick, the 2023 Domaine de L’Olivette Bandol Rosé, hits every note—and then some. I found it at my local Costco for just $15.99, a rare price for a Bandol Rosé, which typically runs twice that. It didn’t just exceed expectations—it reminded me why I love this style: elegance, structure, and soul, all wrapped in superb value.
About Domaine de L’Olivette
A family-run estate with over 200 years of history, Domaine de L’Olivette is nestled in the hills above the Mediterranean near La Cadière-d’Azur. The 55-hectare estate practices sustainable viticulture, deeply rooted in respect for its unique terroir. Long recognized for championing Mourvèdre, the signature grape of Bandol, the domaine crafts wines with depth, elegance, and remarkable aging potential.
Their Bandol Rosé reflects both tradition and place—blending Mourvèdre, Cinsault, and Grenache into a wine that’s as fresh as it is structured.
What Sets Bandol Rosé Apart?
Both Bandol and Provence are located in Southern France, but while Provence rosés are beloved for their pale color and easy-drinking charm, Bandol Rosé plays in a different league. Here’s why:
1. More Mourvèdre, More Muscle
By law, Bandol Rosé must include at least 20% Mourvèdre—often much more. This powerhouse grape brings:
- Depth and structure
- A savory, earthy edge
- Age-worthiness rare in rosé
By contrast, most Côtes de Provence rosés lean more heavily on Grenache and Cinsault, resulting in lighter, fruitier wines meant for quick enjoyment.
2. Terroir That Speaks
Bandol’s limestone soils and Mediterranean sunshine create a unique balance: zesty acidity, saline minerality, and concentrated flavors. It’s terroir you can taste.
3. Serious Rosé for the Table
This isn’t your average pink porch-pounder. Bandol Rosé is built for food—think grilled seafood, bouillabaisse, herbed chicken, or Mediterranean fare. Many examples evolve beautifully with a year or two of bottle age, gaining savory and herbal nuance along the way.
2023 Domaine De L’Olivette Bandol Rosé
This rosé blends Mourvèdre, Grenache, and Cinsault—each contributing something vital:
Cinsault for lift and perfume
Mourvèdre for complexity and structure
Grenache for juicy red fruit
Tasting Note: Pale pink salmon color with enticing red fruit, white peach, wild herbs and a hint of lavender aromas. On the palate, it’s medium bodied with mouthwatering acidity and raspberry, wild strawberry, white peach, spice and subtle savory herbal notes accented with a wet stone minerality. The finish is clean, refreshing, and persistent. 13% ABV | 90 pts
If you spot this bottle at your local Costco, don’t hesitate—at $16, grab a few (and set one aside for the Fall or even next summer) This is the kind of find that makes you want to throw something on the grill and toast to summer, Provençal-style. Santé!

Sadly they don’t sell wine at Costco up here BUT we have enjoyed our share of Bandol wines and are still amazed how under the radar they still are particularly given their QPR.
