Wine of the Week: 2019 Copain Cabernet Franc Taylor Peak

Each week, I highlight a wine that leaves a lasting impression—whether for its distinctive character, compelling story, or sheer drinking pleasure. This week’s standout: the 2019 Copain Cabernet Franc Taylor Peak.

A captivating expression of cool-climate Cab Franc, it strikes a perfect balance between elegance and rustic charm. Inspired by the soulful wines of the Loire Valley, yet kissed by California’s abundant sunshine, it delivers vibrant fruit alongside layered complexity. A true reflection of place, craft, and the beauty of restraint.

Copain Wines

Founded in 1999 by winemaker Wells Guthrie, Copain was born from a vision of crafting wines that embody the restraint and balance of California’s cooler climates. Drawing inspiration from his time in Burgundy and the Rhône Valley, Guthrie set out to create wines that embrace purity over power.

Nestled in the rolling hills of Healdsburg, Copain became known for its beautifully expressive Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Chardonnay, sourced from some of the finest vineyards in Anderson Valley, Mendocino, and Sonoma County. Their dedication to regenerative agriculture, minimalist winemaking, and zero-waste practices further underscores their commitment to both the land and the craft.

In 2016, Copain joined Jackson Family Wines, expanding its reach while staying true to its philosophy—producing wines that showcase vibrant acidity, nuanced depth, and the essence of their cool-climate origins. Note: Copain is Certified California Sustainable Winery.

As former club members, we always appreciated Copain’s premium tasting experiences, made even more memorable by some of the most breathtaking views in Sonoma wine country.

2019 Copain Cabernet Franc Taylor Peak

Perched 1,400 feet above Santa Rosa, at the summit of Taylor Mountain, Copain’s estate vineyard commands a striking vantage point. Here, where the Sonoma Valley, Sonoma Coast, and Bennett Valley AVAs converge, the vineyard’s unique location allows it to be classified as a North Coast wine. More than just a designation, this site embodies the untamed spirit of Cabernet Franc.

Steep, rocky, volcanic soils challenge the vines, while relentless coastal breezes temper the summer sun, ensuring slow, even ripening. The result? A terroir that shapes Cabernet Franc of remarkable character—elegant, structured, and deeply expressive of this singular place.

Tasting Note: Pale ruby with expansive aromas blueberry, black cherry, raspberry cedar wood, crushed gravel, dried herb and a hint of white pepper aromas. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied with a harmonious structure showcasing vibrant acidity and velvety tannins with flavors of raspberry, blueberry, black cherry, and spice with a very appealing savory undertone. Long finish. 13.2% abv| SRP – $100.

While this wine is drinking beautifully now, I believe it will evolve gracefully over the next decade, revealing even greater depth and nuance with time

This wine beautifully speaks to both place and philosophy—a masterful balance of Old World restraint and California vibrancy. With its lifted aromatics, refined structure and savory undertone, it offers a glimpse into what makes Copain’s cool-climate approach so compelling. Whether enjoyed now for its bright fruit and energy or cellared for deeper complexity, this wine is a standout for lovers of elegant, terroir-driven Cabernet Franc.

If you’re a fan of cool-climate Cabernet Franc, this one is worth seeking out!
