Each week, I spotlight a wine that truly captivates—whether for its distinctive character, fascinating story, or the sheer delight it brings to the glass. This week’s feature is the 2015 Prie Vineyards Petit Verdot Hux Vineyard, captivating expression of a lesser-known Bordeaux variety that, in the skilled hands, thrives in Lodi’s Mediterranean climate.
Prie Vineyards
John and Lisa Gash, the passionate duo behind PRIE Vineyard & Winery, made a life-changing move in 2012, leaving the Livermore Valley to embrace the charm and potential of Lodi’s wine country. That year, they purchased a home and vineyard in Lodi’s Mokelumne River AVA, stepping into the local winemaking scene with enthusiasm. The vineyard, once planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, marked the beginning of their journey to hand craft compelling wines and contribute to the vibrant Lodi wine community.
Today, their estate vineyard is a reflection of their adventurous spirit, showcasing an eclectic mix of grape varieties. Rhône classics like Grenache and Mourvèdre share space with Iberian treasures such as Mencía and Prieto Picudo, alongside Bordeaux stalwart Cabernet Franc and Picpoul Blanc which is native to the Languedoc region of Southern France. Beyond their estate vines, they source sustainably grown grapes from select vineyards across the Lodi AVA. This approach allows them to create a diverse array of wines, including Barbera, Counoise, Picpoul Blanc, Carignane, Alicante Bouschet, and Dornfelder—a true celebration of the road less traveled.
Sustainability lies at the heart of their mission. They’ve adopted environmentally balanced farming practices that reduce reliance on chemical fertilizers and pest control, conserve resources, and minimize landfill waste. Each year, they deepen their commitment to stewardship by raising chickens for eggs and natural pest control, practicing no-till organic farming, and cultivating cover crops such as native grasses, grains, crimson clover, California poppies, and other soil-enhancing plants. Their no-till approach not only enriches the soil but also fosters beneficial insects, improves carbon capture, and reduces dust, contributing to cleaner air across the valley.
Their dedication extends to minimizing the winery’s resource footprint. In 2017, they installed a 12 kW solar system to power the main building, with plans to double capacity to 24 kW in a future phase. This expansion will transition them from energy-neutral to energy-positive. They’re also embracing regenerative and organic agricultural practices inspired by permaculture. This includes food-scaping, nurturing pollinators, fostering native plants, and creating habitats that welcome wildlife.
With their innovative spirit, dedication to sustainability, and passion for crafting distinctive wines, John and Lisa Gash are not only redefining their own vineyard but also leaving an indelible mark on Lodi’s wine community.
2015 Prie Vineyards Petit Verdot Hux Vineyard
Petit Verdot is one of 13 permitted grape varieties in Bordeaux, traditionally used in small amounts to enhance blends dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Known for adding color, structure, and spice, it plays a supporting role in its homeland. However, in Lodi’s warmer Mediterranean climate, Petit Verdot takes center stage, producing supple, medium- to full-bodied wines with depth and character.
Tasting Note: Deep garnet color with enticing black cherry, plum, leather and floral aromas with a hint of mint. On the palate, it’s medium bodies with balanced acidity and fine grained tannins with black cherry, plum, subtle red currant flavors with a hint of dried herbs. Medium plus finish. 12.9% abv|88pts
We typically enjoy wine alongside a meal, but this wine proved to be just as delightful on its own. That said, its bold flavors and supple structure make it an excellent companion to rich dishes. Consider pairing it with hearty cuts of red meat such as veal, lamb, spicy pork, steak, sausage, or wild game. It also complements well-aged cheeses like Stilton. Other great matches include barbecue, beef stew, roasted rack of lamb, or game birds.
In every glass, the 2015 PRIE Vineyards Petit Verdot reveals the care and artistry behind its creation. Its structure, flavorful character, and low alcohol make it a captivating sip, inviting you to discover the beauty of this often-overlooked variety. Whether you’re a seasoned wine enthusiast or simply exploring new horizons, this wine offers a delightful journey into Lodi’s winemaking excellence—one sip at a time.
