Wine of the Week: 2016 Bedrock Wine Co. Beduccini

Each week, I like to spotlight a wine that has truly stood out —whether for its unique character, the story behind its creation, or simply the pure joy it brings. This week’s pick – the 2016 Bedrock Wine Co. Beduccini is no exception. From the moment I poured this wine into the glass, and sniffed its aromas, I knew it was something special. This bottle captures everything I look for in a wine: elegance, complexity, and a deep sense of place (or in this case places)

Sometimes, the most captivating wines come from the unexpected. Enter the 2016 Bedrock Beduccini, a wine that Bedrock Wine Co.—renowned for its old vine field blends—describes as “one of the craziest” they’ve ever crafted.

The story begins with a meager 400 pounds of Zinfandel from the 1906 plantings at Puccini Vineyard, harvested on the same day as a small lot of mixed varietals—including Grenache, Syrah, Petite Sirah, and even Semillon—from Bedrock’s library variety block. Neither lot was large enough for a traditional fermentation, so Bedrock decided to break all the rules and co-ferment everything, whole cluster, in a one-ton open-top tank.

What emerged was not the chaotic blend they feared, but a captivating, richly structured wine—so exceptional they decided to bottle it on its own.

Tasting Note: Medium ruby color with aromatic blackberry, black cherry, lilac, dried earth chaparral, black pepper and a hint of Kirsch aromas. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied with vibrant acidity and chewy tannins with blackberry, black cherry, red currant, savory spice, and graphite flavors. Long finish. 600 bottles produced. 14% abv |SRP – $39| 90pts. Fabulous with Pulled Pork, This versatile wine would also shine alongside braised or roasted lamb, pork, wild game, or your favorite cut of steak.

This wine is a rare tribute to the beauty of serendipity and the art of embracing the unexpected.

It’s drinking beautifully now (I popped and poured, but a decant is recommended), but I believe it has the potential to evolve gracefully over the next 5-10 years. Cheers!

You’ve written about this producer before and we need to try them — this sounds exactly like the style we love and that pulled pork pairing sounds perfect!
