Savoring the Legacy: Exploring the Best of Flora Springs’ Flagship Wines

In 2020, Flora Springs, a beloved Napa Valley institution with deep roots in the region, began a new chapter in its rich history. The Komes family, who had owned the property since Jerry and Flora purchased it in 1977, announced the sale of the winery estate to Château Smith Haut Lafitte, a distinguished name from France’s Bordeaux region.

However, the Komes family remains remains deeply connected to their legacy in Napa Valley. They retained ownership of the iconic Flora Springs brand, along with their flagship Trilogy and Soliloquy labels, and over 200 acres of prime estate vineyards in the St. Helena, Rutherford, and Oakville AVAs. These holdings include the prized sources for their flagship wines and the beloved tasting room on St. Helena Highway.

This strategic decision to downsize was a key part of the family’s estate and succession planning. It enables the family to be laser focused on what truly matters: crafting exceptional wines, providing outstanding customer service, and creating memorable experiences for their guests.

As the third generation of the Komes family steps up to lead the Flora Springs brands, they carry forward a legacy of excellence, ensuring that the winery’s heritage continues to thrive under their dedicated stewardship.

L – 2021 Trilogy; R – 2023 Soliloqy

Soliloquy represents the continuation of a remarkable journey that began in 1989 when the Flora Springs family recognized the distinctive character of the Sauvignon Blanc grapes from a specific block of their estate Crossroads Vineyard in the prestigious Oakville AVA. Captivated by its unique qualities, they decided to bottle this wine separately, naming it Soliloquy. Shortly after, the world-renowned UC Davis lab certified these grapes as a singular clone, uniquely belonging to Flora Springs. However, in the 1990s, the vines became diseased, nearly facing extinction. Undeterred, the family embarked on an eight-year mission to preserve this piece of Napa Valley history. Through careful cultivation, they regenerated the Soliloquy clone, starting with new plant material in a lab, propagating a few dozen vines in a nursery, and ultimately replanting them in the vineyard. After years of meticulous experimentation with yeast strains, fermentation techniques, aging methods, and varietal compositions, Soliloquy has evolved into the distinctive blend it is today.
