Two Stunning White Wines from Theorem Vineyards

Today, I’m thrilled to introduce to you to Theorem Vineyards, a relative newcomer to the Napa Valley wine scene.

Not familiar with the name? Neither was I until I received tasting samples of the 2020 Theorem Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay.

And is it any wonder?

There are around 500 unique physical bonded locations (a winery) within Napa County, and more than 1,000 unique commercial wine producers explains the Napa Wine Project! It’s a full-time job to keep score!

About Theorem Vineyards

As tourists, Texans Jason and Kisha Itkin were drawn to Napa’s irresistible charms – its captivating natural beauty, history and world-class wines.

Inspired by the notion of fusing art and science it takes to make ultra-premium wine, the couple launched into searching for property in the Napa Valley.

One cold and rainy day in 2012, they were shown a property in the Diamond Mountain District AVA. The historic buildings on the property had fallen into shambles and its vineyards, which were established in the 19th century, were overgrown and deer ravaged.

With a vision of what could be, the couple purchased the 60 acre property, which includes an old Victorian home, schoolhouse, Long Barn(formerly a chicken coop), and a vineyard.

Determined to honor the site’s considerable history, Kisha set about revitalizing the property, its vineyard and building a state of the art winery on the property. That endeavor was completed in 2018.

Passionate about high-elevation fruit, the couple also own a 34-acre property in the Moon Mountain AVA which straddles the Napa/Sonoma county line. And in 2021, they open their Tasting Barn.

As President, Kisha oversees all vineyard and winery operations for both their home estate on Diamond Mountain, and the Moon Mountain estate. Kathleen Ward is the Winemaker.

The Wines

Fruit for the 2020 Theorem Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc and 2020 Chardonnay were sourced from their 15-acre Moon Mountain vineyard, which is situated at 1,800 feet of elevation above Sonoma Valley along the western slopes of Mayacamas Mountain (see map below).

The vineyard is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc on clay loam soil and features abundant sunlight and is influenced by crosswinds from both the Pacific Ocean and the San Pablo Bay.

Very pale lemon yellow color with inviting just ripe fresh white peach, lemon oil, grapefruit zest, white flowers, crushed rock and kiss of honey aromas On the palate it’s medium-bodied with mouth-watering zesty acidity with just ripe white peach, grapefruit, lime zest, wet stone and a subtle honey note with a long finish. 100% SB (75% Clone 1; 25% Musque Clone) Raised in equal proportions of neutral oak, stainless and concrete. 14% abv.|524 cases produced|SRP – $48

It has literally been years since I’ve had a Sauvignon Blanc I enjoyed so much. What a memorable wine!

2020 Theorem Vineyards Chardonnay

Pale golden color with enticing yellow apple, lemon cream, buttered sourdough toast and subtle vanilla aromas with a very appealing hint of wet chalk. On the palate it’s medium-bodied with vibrant acidity and a lovely mouthfeel. It shows and intriguing mix of baked and fresh yellow apple, Asian pear, lemon zest, subtle oak spice, and vanilla with a hint of wet stone. 100% Chardonnay (Wente and Clone 4). Raised in 75% French oak(58% neutral, 17% new), 25% stainless steel. 14% abv|470 cases|SRP -$58

I tend to prefer unoaked Chardonnay, but this alluring wine shows how mountain fruit and the judicious use of oak can complicate and elevate Chardonnay. Brava!
