Wine of the Week: 2012 Bedrock Wine Co. Heritage Wine Evangelho Vineyard

I adore the singular beauty of field blend wines for their complexity and character, and this wine is a great exemplar of an ancient-vine field blend wine!

This wine is a field blend of Zinfandel, Carignan, Mourvèdre, Palomino, Alicante Bouschet and Mission from the Evangelho vineyard planted in the 1890s that features own rooted, head-trained, vines planted in Delhi sands and dry farmed.

The vineyard is a viticultural survivor. Believe it or not, it’s wedged between a PG&E plant, a Burger King, and a motel that rents rooms by the hour!

Tasting Note:

Nearly opaque black red color with lifted black fruit and red fruit, chaparral, spice cake, white pepper and a hint of lavender aromas. On the palate it’s round and energetic with well integrated tannins and ripe black raspberry, black cherry, blackberry and a hint of elderberry with a subtle vein of minerality and a long spice accented finish. 91pts|14.1% abv

About Bedrock Wine Co.

Bedrock Wine Co. was founded in 2007 by Morgan Twain-Peterson, MW in a 550 square-foot, former chicken coop with 8 foot ceilings and no fermentation space. After six years of Bedrock being a one-man-show, Morgan was able to talk his best friend, Chris Cottrell, into moving to California from New York to join him.  With completion of construction of their new winemaking facility they now happily have a little more space to move around. As for that converted chicken coop?  Well, it’s still their wine tasting “room”  for pick up parties.  However they recently opened a pubic tasting room at the 166 year-old General Joseph Hooker House, on the downtown Sonoma Square (click here for review).

There are two things that make Bedrock Wine Co. special in my view – the first is Morgan.  He’s been making wine since he was a child. Before returning to California to focus on revitalizing California’s heirloom vineyards, he worked harvests in McLaren Vale, Australia and worked as a visiting winemaker at Chateau Lynch-Bages in Bordeaux.  He has been named one of the Top 100 Most Influential U.S. Winemakersand Chronicle Winemaker of the Year

The second is his vineyard sources. My post entitled Bedrock Wine Co: Where Old Vine Love And Transcendent Wine Making Come Together, focuses on the some of the sources of Bedrock’s fruit.

The winery is first and foremost a mission-driven operation dedicated to preserving and rehabilitating old vineyards around California. These vineyards, planted by California’s viticultural pioneers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, are living pieces of history. Not only are we able to draw inspiration from those very pioneers, but we get to actually use the materials they planted, which have survived two world wars, Prohibition and a constantly changing marketplace. If something has been growing for over 100 years it not only deserves the respect of us humans, but it probably makes some darn good wine too
