Wine of the Day: 2017 Memento Mori Cabernet Sauvignon

We blend their unique characteristics–elegance, power, finish, and longevity–to create a perfectly balanced wine that seduces the palate year after year

Memento Mori

Memento Mori (“MM”) was founded by friends Hayes Drumwright, Adriel Lares, and Adam Craun. Hayes and Adrial met while in high school in Texas. Hayes attended Boston University where he met Adam as freshman while both were on the swim team. The three became bosom buddies. Hayes was diagnosed with an aggressive, life-threatening cancerous tumor while still in college and only 21 years old.

Ultimately, he beat the cancerous tumor and got a clean bill of health, but the experience gave him a new perspective on life. The three made a pact that they would embrace life to the fullest and pursue their passions.

All three had very successful technology related careers. They became enamored with Napa Valley wines, and its lifestyle. Ultimately, they were introduced to grape grower Andy Beckstoffer, who was was impressed by their life stories and interest in producing wine from premium vineyards.

The three teamed up with well-regarded, founding winemaker Sam Kaplan and in 2010, their inaugural vintage produced 150 cases of wine.

Memento Mori is translated from Latin as “Remember That You Will Die”, The founders translation is “Remember To Live”. The name pays homage to their philosophy of living dating back to the Hayes’ life-threatening experience with cancer.

Fruit for their wines are sourced from some of Napa’s finest and most renown vineyards. From St. Helena – two Beckstoffer Vineyards (Dr. Crane and Las Piedras), and from Oakville, the Weitz Vineyard, Vine Hill Ranch and Oakville Ranch. Each of the vineyards stands on its own, is often bottled as a vineyard designate, and has consistently been the source behind many legendary wines. “We blend their unique characteristics–elegance, power, finish, and longevity–to create a perfectly balanced wine that seduces the palate year after year” explains the MM team.
