My WOTD is the 2015 Herdade Pegos Claros “Primo” which hails from the new-to-me Palmela DOC on the Setúbal Peninsula of Portugal. The star red grape (also new-to me) of the peninsula is Castelão, an indigenous grape variety which thrives in the peninsula’s warm, sandy soils, and can ripen to perfection, producing lovely, fresh, fruity wines with moderate alcohol and ripe tannins.
The 2015 Herdade Pegos Claros “Primo” is a blend of 90% Castelão (a.k.a. Periquita) and 10% Tintinha (interesting side-note, Tintinha a.k.a Aramon Noir in France, where it was primarily grown in the Languedoc-Roussillon in southern France. Between the late 19th century and the 1960s, it was France’s most grown grape variety).
The wine pours a deep black red, nearly opaque color with black and red fruit, espresso, leather and savory spice aromas. On the palate it’s medium-full bodied, structured, and persistent with very good acidity and firm well integrated, ripe tannins. It show mouth-filling flavors of blackberry, plum, black and red currant, and sour cherry flavors with an appealing graphite minerality and a long finish. This distinguished wine is approachable now with a decant, but should improve with age over next 2-5 years. #Sample| 14% abv| SRP – $75. 91pts.
Serve with grilled, smoked and cured meats, stews, and hard cheeses. Imported by Costa Nova Wines.

I know Pegos Claros very well but haven’t seen this bottling before. Will do some research on Aramon Noir !
