Bourboulenc (click here for pronunciation) is an ancient grape, first mentioned in literature in the early 16th century.  It has always been identified with the wine regions of Southern France including LanguedocProvence and the Rhone Valley.   It is the fourth-most planted white grape in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation (after Grenache Blanc, Clairette, and Roussanne). Its vines are fairly vigorous, the berries relatively large, and the clusters loose, which makes it resistant to rot.  It is known in France to make wines with citrus aromatics and a distinctive smoky character, with fairly good acids and relatively low alcohol.

Bourboulenc is primarily used  for blending  in Southern France’s wine regions.

Fruit for this wine is sourced from a 1-acre of Acquiesce’s estate vineyards in Mokelumne River AVA of the Lodi Appellation.  The grapes clones are Tablas Creek cuttings from the famous French Château de Beaucastel Winery in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape region.  After hand-picking, the grapes were immediately pressed as whole clusters to capture their fresh, flavorful character. The juice is then cool fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks.

My tasting notes follow:

Color – Very pale straw
Aromas – Quince, Key lime, Mandarin orange zest, orange blossom, honeysuckle, and wild fennel in the fall, with a distinctive smoky note
Body – Medium-bodied, dry and fresh with zesty acidity
Taste – Orange and quince confit with Mandarin orange zest, Key lime,  and honey with an appealing kiss of saline minerality
Finish – Medium-long
