2019 Lodi ZinFest; The Rosé Edition

I attended my first Lodi Zinfest the weekend before last.   It was the 15th annual Lodi Zinfest, and despite rain for the first time in its 15 year history, we had a great time!

Of course, as the self-proclaimed “Zinfandel Capital of the World”, there was plenty of Zinfandel to be tasted, but the event was about much more than Zinfandel.

With over 100 grape varieties being grown in the Lodi AVA, and 200+ wines that were poured, it was a great opportunity to sample wines produced from the tremendous diversity of grape (Kerner or Trincadera anyone?) varieties that have contributed to raising Lodi’s profile for fine wine in recent years.

Aside from plenty of wine tasting opportunities, I also had a chance to attend a two of the Zinfest Wine School sessions and enjoy the food and entertainment offered.

Whenever I attend a big wine tasting event like this I have a plan.  Since my wife and I were with friends, it was going to be my usual “hit and run” approach.  Instead I planned to taste some whites, and rosés and see how the day unfolded thereafter.

Upon our arrival we were greeted with a taste of the 2018 LangeTwins Aglianico Rose. It’s a wonderful rosé that I’ve previously written about on this blog.

After tasting another couple of rosés, I decided to change my plan and focus on rosés

Here are my 10 favorite Rosé tasted at Zinfest.  I’ve divided between Rosé comprised of Rhône grape varieties, and Italian and other grape varieties.

Sparkling Rose

I also tasted a couple of noteworthy Sparkling Rosé,

I can recall a time not too many years ago when it seemed to me that only a handful of Lodi vintners were crafting the dry style rosé wines that I prefer.  I thrilled with the number of dry, fresh style rosé wines (and a couple of lovely off-dry options too) I tasted at Zinfest!

Just like their Zinfandels,  and a plethora of other wines, Lodi offers wonderful choices for rosé wines for the casual wine drinker and the wine enthusiast alike!
