2014 Masthead Sangiovese Mohr-Fry Ranch;...an appealing supple mouth-feel and ample, alluring black cherry, pomegranate, and vanilla flavors accented with the kind of restrained savoriness that strikes adds an enticing balance between its fruity and savory character…
This wine is the result of a collaboration between Scotto Cellars and four noteworthy wine bloggers; Peter Bourget and Nancy Brazil of Pull That Cork, Melanie Ofenloch, the Dallas Wine Chick, and Cindy Rynning of Grape Experiences. The quartet was given eleven barrel samples of premium wine from some of Lodi’s finest vineyards and producers and challenged to create a wine of superior quality with widespread appeal. The result was 44 cases of this wine. The wine is 100% Sangiovese sourced from Block 433 of the historic own-rooted Mohr-Fry vineyard planted in the 1930’s. After extended fermentation in stainless steel, the wine was moved into French, American and Hungarian oak barrels. After 18 months the barrels were tasted separately, and the final blend was made of 50/50 combination of Sangiovese from French and Hungarian oak.
Ruby color with appealing red fruit, red licorice, dried herb and spiced vanilla aromas. On the palate it’s medium-bodied with fresh, medium-plus acidity, dusty well integrated tannins, an appealing supple mouth-feel and ample, alluring black cherry, pomegranate, and vanilla flavors accented with the kind of restrained savoriness that strikes adds an enticing balance between its fruity and savory character; Medium finish. Very good to outstanding ( 89-90pts).
