Wine of the Week; 2013 Heitz Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon

Each week, I spotlight a wine that stands out—whether for its distinctive character, compelling story, or the pure joy it brings to the glass. This week, I’m thrilled to feature the 2013 Heitz Wine Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon, a beautifully structured wine that was gifted to me and instantly transported me back to fond memories of Napa Valley.

Heitz Wine Cellars

Heitz Wine Cellar is a cornerstone of Napa Valley’s winemaking legacy. Founded in 1961 by Joe and Alice Heitz, the winery redefined Napa’s potential when it introduced the region’s first vineyard-designated Cabernet Sauvignon—the legendary Martha’s Vineyard—in 1966. This milestone not only cemented Heitz’s reputation but also helped shape Napa Valley’s global standing in fine wine.

Long before sustainability became a buzzword, Heitz Wine Cellar embraced organic and sustainable farming. Today, all of their estate vineyards—including Martha’s Vineyard, Trailside Vineyard, and Linda Falls Vineyard—are certified organic. Their commitment extends beyond organic farming into biodynamic practices, treating the vineyard as a self-sustaining ecosystem. By utilizing compost, cover crops, natural pest management, and lunar-influenced viticultural techniques, Heitz nurtures vines that produce wines of remarkable purity and depth—without a trace of synthetic chemicals.

This philosophy of stewardship ensures that the land remains vibrant and healthy for generations to come.

In 2018, Heitz Wine Cellar was acquired by Gaylon Lawrence Jr., who brought in Master Sommelier Carlton McCoy Jr. as CEO. Under their leadership, the winery has maintained its deep respect for tradition while refining its winemaking approach, emphasizing extended aging and a restrained, elegant style.

On a personal note, back when I frequented Napa Valley more often, Heitz Wine Cellar was always a must-stop. It was one of the last well-known wineries to offer complimentary tastings, and among the wines poured was a delightful Grignolino Rosé—a rare treat that left a lasting impression. Those visits came at a time when Napa Valley’s tasting fees were still relatively reasonable, before they skyrocketed into today’s often eye-watering prices.

2013 Heitz Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon

Tasting note: Deep garnet color with aromatic blackberry, black cherry, cassis, sandalwood, vanilla, leather and subtle violet and eucalyptus notes. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied and harmonious with lively, balanced acidity and well integrated velvaty tannins; with ripe blackberry, black cherry, vanilla, subtle cassis and blueberry flavors. Long finish. 14.5% abv

Heitz Wine Cellar has always been a torchbearer of Napa’s timeless elegance, and this 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is a stunning testament to that legacy.

If you haven’t explored Heitz Wine Cellar, their Napa Valley bottling is a perfect introduction to their philosophy of craftsmanship and tradition. The 2019 vintage retails for $85 (a relative bargain in the Napa Valley)
